A camcorder for your PC – that’s what I would choose to say if I were asked to very briefly describe the ScreenCam application for Windows-powered machines. You see, you can use this application to record whatever is displayed on your screen, view the video recording, edit the recording, and export the recording.

The system requirements for running ScreenCam are: 1GHz processor or better, 256MB of RAM memory or more, 16-bit video card with 800x600 minimum resolution, Soundblaster compatible sound card with speakers and microphone if you want to narrate, Adobe Flash Player 8 or newer, Windows operating system (anything from XP SP3 up to 8).

By default, ScreenCam displays an EZ interface – from it you can pick what will be recorded (single window, an area on the screen, full screen), you can launch the recording process, pause it, stop it, exit the application, and more.
Behind the EZ interface there’s the larger ScreenCam interface. The nice thing about it is that you won’t have to go through a steep learning curve to get accustomed to it. You won’t have any problems using the interface to access ScreenCam’s functionality.

The main features that ScreenCam has to offer are: record a window, a region of the screen, or the entire screen; playback the recording, open an existing recording; insert notes, text, sound, lines, images, and more; crop, split, merge, compress movies; export as AVI, GIF, SWF, and other formats; convert SWF to EXE; and more.

You have a trial period of 30 days to uncover all the functionality ScreenCam has to offer. A prompt will remind you about this fact every time you launch the trial version of ScreenCam. To get rid of this reminder prompt and to keep using ScreenCam after the trial period expires, you will have to purchase a license.

Record whatever is on your screen, view the recording, edit the recording, and export the recording. This sort of functionality is nicely covered by ScreenCam.

Pros

The system requirements for running ScreenCam are very low; the installation process will go along smoothly and rapidly. There’s a handy EZ interface. You can record the whole screen, a certain region of the screen, or a particular window. You can view the recording, edit it, and export it. Support for multiple output formats is provided. There’s a tool to convert SWF to EXE. There's a ScreenCam add-in for Microsoft PowerPoint.

Cons

Trial limitations: nag screen, 30-day trial.
